One person in comments mentioned "cruel russians" if she new any real life she would know that that sort of storey could have happened ANYWHERE.
It is very typical -- people move in N.America and never bother to learn anything about english culture. They live in a dream world believing that is a true America and pass judegments on Russia simply because it is the only country they have a knowldege of! For illitarate immigrant debils -- Clockwork Orange is a british classic and a satire not on russian but modern western society!
The russian remake suffers of Karamazovschina of course!
The value of Strugackey novels is that they raise in their philosophical sense above everyday social realities they are about life and mind themselves. Ironically this movie could be made very well on low budget and with authentic Strugackey spirit. Why never ever anybody made a good movie on Strugazkey... May be its precisely for that philosophical spirit which is so hard to copy.
But.. where you've seen really good sci-fi movies? Few japaneese and french and couple Americans? Voila! (Actualy french style of sci-fi would have worked times better for this novel)
One caveat though it is french -russian coproduction so movie suffers a bit from french "a la russe" ethnical style. But ..... may be it's for better -- it makes it more endearing.
While it does reflect stereotypes and the way of thinking of the time (when it was made) it is one of those movies which transcends time and circumstances. It skips the frame of "art for art" (a la Tarkovskey)and reaches highest truths about life. It is a religeus piece.
I hope that somebody who would stumble upon it in the archives would see behind the story what ultemately true art serves for. Masterpiece in its highest sense.
I know prostitution business quite well and would like to point out that those guys who say that main character actor does not fit the image of pimp simply have very fairy idea of how it’s done. I really enjoyed his girl – actress and her heroine are fantastic unlike a host of good Russian useless but very spiritual Cinderellas who flood the screens of Russian movies.
This business is tricky in Russia as you never know what comes next, there is good money and business ethics in USA but problems with puritan moral, Canada is safe heaven but money are just decent. The most dangerous clients are many Asians as they tend to consider not only women but humans in general as a property and negroes as they often lack marbles. Russian women are smart and beautiful but totally lack culture of sexuality and require sometimes a lot of work to make them first class whores.
Abonents of etvnet.ca live and enjoy life in capitalist countries and thus have no right to judge pimps and prostitutes as they made conscious choice by immigration to support the system which turns everything into money and creates that sort of life.
Those guardians of moral who get excited about old man sleeping with young girl -- Same guardians get even more excited when older woman sleeps with young boy.
Also, reckon, unlike French Russians do not distinguish between sex and loyalty. No wonder for people who use sex for swearing!
Brothers Michalkovs are not only excellent artsits but fellas who have intimate knowledge of both of the West and Russia (also fenomenal chameleons who can make movies to please the West or to please Russia). This movie is a critics NOT of Russia but modern mercantile world (Russians are just brutaly honest and lack civility and business saviness of Americans). If some people have a cushy life in America and call Russia names -- may be they should read a novel of Copolla "Brakfeast at Tiffany's" to learn what America realy is outside their "mouse corner with seven elefants". It is also in a way inspirational as it does show what Russians still haven't lost despite Coca-cola culture.
A propos -- Dear Russian women -- you would never make whores (in a good sense) of the first class even won't try! -- "Carmens" are Latin property. The whole point -- can't do whoring as a professional do not get in this mess. Just like a soldier!
The movie is an epic symbolic poem about what it takes to become the man and the hero. And THAT is WHY it doesn't and shouldn't have continuation. And funny enough even though it is not real it tells way much more on this subject than conventional hystorical pictures. May be some of those smart critics do not know the subject to begin with? I think they are like some of those fellaws who can sing about only those things which under their nose. Voila!
Who would make that sort of art nowdays? Modern public have other concerns. Subtelty of irony and finesse of melody all lost for good for them (in America it never existed anyway). Besides this is not lavish "Silva" it doesn't have this international mass appeal and one has to know and appreciate French Art in it's best.
And I would like to point out that it is easy to believe living in N.America that life can exist without death. It is not only false but even more -- those who have not become friends with death and horror will never learn love and kindness that is what ultimately this movie is about.
