The Civil War; hunger, devastation, red army, white army, bandits and beggars. A teacher transports bread to hungry children, her traveling companions are a wounded security officer Gorbach and a sailor Alexander Andronov. A head of a railway station Zaitsev joins them carrying three bars of gold for the Commissariat. But the bread and gold will get to Moscow with the only survivor, Gorbach.
